This past weekend unfurled a deeply cherished chapter in my life, one I’ve anticipated with immense joy and hopeful prayers for many years. My dear friend, Cameron, finally tied the knot! It was a truly memorable occasion, a weekend brimming with heartwarming moments, and it was perfectly bookended by the comforting embrace of this fresh arugula pesto pasta. But before we delve into the culinary delight, allow me to share why this particular wedding held such profound significance for me.
Eight years ago, I found myself embarking on a new journey, fresh out of college, where every prospect felt bright, shiny, and brimming with potential. I had just relocated to a vibrant new city, accepted an exciting new position at one of the largest churches I had ever encountered, and taken on the leadership of a contemporary choir. While my collegiate years were spent immersed in a modern worship band, making me comfortable with the church’s contemporary music scene, my foundational training was in classical voice – yes, I was an opera major! And despite the thrill of loud guitars and drums week after week, a part of me yearned for the familiar harmonies and nuanced melodies of my classical “comfort zone.”
Then, an email landed in our department from another recent college graduate, requesting an audition for the choir. He claimed to love both classical and contemporary singing, instantly piquing our staff’s interest. We arranged a routine audition, gathering around our grand piano. Yet, the moment Cameron’s voice filled the room, we knew this was anything but routine. Cameron possesses one of the most remarkable voices I have ever had the privilege to hear. His vocal range and versatility are astounding; he can effortlessly transition from the powerful arias of Pavarotti to the smooth crooning of Sinatra, and then to the modern folk melodies of Jason Mraz, leaving listeners utterly captivated every single time.

Our music director, recognizing our shared classical background, decided to break from the usual contemporary repertoire during Cameron’s first worship performance. He paired us to surprise the congregation with the classical Andrea Bocelli and Charlotte Church arrangement of “The Prayer.” Singing it together for the first time at the age of 22, and then again a few weeks ago at 30, marking easily our hundredth performance (literally), is always an indescribable thrill. There are those rare, magical moments as a musician when you simply “click” with another artist, and for me, whenever I venture back into the world of classical duets, Cameron is the partner I always hope for. Our voices blend seamlessly, creating a synergy that transcends mere notes and truly moves an audience.
Beyond his extraordinary vocal talent, which he diligently maintains, Cameron is profoundly respected for his character. He is, without a doubt, one of the most humble, gracious, and encouraging individuals I know – truly the salt of the earth. His integrity and kindness shine through in every interaction, making him a cherished friend and colleague to many.

Through countless hours of serving together at church, performing at an array of weddings, funerals, and concerts, and even becoming workout partners during our years living near the Plaza in Kansas City, I truly got to know Cameron exceptionally well over the past eight years. Our conversations spanned the spectrum of life’s experiences – the highs and lows of my job, his fascinating (and sometimes chaotic) stories from medical school, and, of course, shared laughs and a few tears over a long succession of set-ups and dates that never quite blossomed as we hoped. We were each other’s confidantes, navigating the complexities of young adulthood together.
Despite our shared dating mishaps, I always had a strong intuition that Cameron would eventually find love with someone from his hometown. And so it happened, almost two years ago, he casually dropped a bombshell during one of our walks: he was driving home to Joplin, Missouri, to reconnect with a girl from high school. They hadn’t really known each other well growing up, but from that very first date, it was undeniably clear to him that she was someone truly special he wanted to know intimately. Our usual post-date debriefs, typically met with a shake of the head and a sigh, took a completely different turn that night. I vividly remember his beaming smile and unwavering certainty as he declared, “It was absolutely *great*!” He couldn’t wait to take her out again, a sentiment I hadn’t heard from him before.
As soon as we all had the chance to meet Emily, it became instantly apparent that they were, quite literally, a match made in heaven. Emily exuded sweetness, genuine care, intelligence, and a delightful sense of humor. The beautiful irony was that her parents and Cameron’s had been close friends for years, adding another layer of perfect synergy for two individuals who deeply value family connections. Their bond was undeniable, built on mutual respect, affection, and a shared understanding of life’s important things.

However, a few months into their blossoming relationship, we all received a text one night that momentarily brought the world to a halt. Cameron’s newlywed 26-year-old brother was tragically killed in a car wreck, a story devastating beyond words. With Emily steadfastly by his side, Cameron and his parents sat in the front row of the funeral service, demonstrating incredible strength. Through their profound grief and tears, they courageously celebrated a life well-lived, holding onto the hope that they would somehow make it through this immense pain and one day reunite with him. Emily’s unwavering support during this period only solidified her place in Cameron’s life, showing her true character and compassion.
The year and a half since that heartbreaking day has been a journey filled with both challenges and moments of healing. But this past weekend, we gathered once more in the same beloved church, surrounded by the same dear friends, for what felt like a truly profound and joyful reunion — Cameron and Emily exchanged their vows! Cameron was all smiles, radiating happiness, while Emily shone with breathtaking beauty. After such a long anticipation and a difficult journey, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as they spoke their vows. My friends and I were all happy, teary wrecks, but somehow, I managed to compose myself enough to sing our classic song alongside his old vocal instructor, the very person who sent us that fateful recommendation letter so many years ago. Yet, the absolute musical highlight of the entire wedding was when — you guessed it — Cameron delivered a surprise serenade to his stunning bride, singing a gorgeous rendition of “Always.” That wedding will undoubtedly be etched in history as an exceptionally special and heartwarming day, a true celebration of enduring love and resilience.

Admittedly, another hugely memorable moment of the weekend involved a somewhat harrowing experience: getting hopelessly lost on the streets of Joplin while tornado sirens wailed and people drove frantically as we struggled to reach our hotel. And upon arrival, the deafening indoor sirens and the surprising *lack* of a basement were less than reassuring. Thankfully, the town was spared from the worst of the storm this time, and we all made it to the church safely and on time, a minor adventure in an otherwise perfect weekend.
Before departing for Joplin and immediately upon my return home, my thoughts turned to food blogging, specifically to share the wonders of the arugula pesto pasta I had recently created. I’ve been making homemade pesto recipes for years, and for just as long, I’ve been a fervent admirer of arugula’s peppery freshness. Yet, remarkably, I had never thought to combine the two into a pesto! It finally felt like the opportune moment. So, I prepared a large batch to savor right before my journey and packed some for the road. The delicious leftovers were patiently waiting for me upon my return to Kansas City. Let me tell you, if you appreciate the distinctive flavor of arugula, this pesto pasta is as magnificent and incredibly simple to prepare as you might imagine. It has quickly become a new culinary favorite, one I eagerly anticipate making again and again, especially when seeking a fresh, vibrant, and satisfying meal.

Here’s to the beautiful newlyweds, Cameron and Emily, and to the delightful, comforting food that is so often woven into the heart of our most treasured memories. May their life together be as rich and fulfilling as a perfectly made bowl of pasta.

Description
This recipe for fresh arugula pesto pasta is incredibly simple to make and bursts with delicious, vibrant flavor. It’s an ideal quick weeknight meal or a delightful dish for entertaining. The peppery arugula creates a unique twist on traditional pesto, offering a refreshing and satisfying culinary experience.
Ingredients
- 1 pound dried pasta (such as linguine, spaghetti, or penne)
- 5 ounces fresh baby arugula, thoroughly washed and dried
- 6 cloves garlic, peeled
- 1 cup pine nuts, lightly toasted and divided (reserve some for garnish)
- 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra for serving
- Juice of half a fresh lemon
- 2/3 cup high-quality extra-virgin olive oil
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of generously salted water to a rolling boil. Add the dried pasta and cook according to package instructions until it is perfectly al dente.
- While the pasta is cooking, prepare the arugula pesto. In a food processor, combine the washed arugula, peeled garlic cloves, 2/3 cup of the toasted pine nuts, grated Parmesan cheese, and fresh lemon juice. Pulse these ingredients together until they are finely chopped and well combined.
- With the food processor running, slowly drizzle in the extra-virgin olive oil until the pesto is smooth, creamy, and fully incorporated. Season the pesto with salt and freshly ground black pepper to your preference.
- Once the pasta reaches al dente, drain it thoroughly, reserving about 1/4 cup of the pasta water if you desire a thinner sauce. Immediately transfer the hot pasta to a large serving bowl.
- Add the fresh arugula pesto to the hot pasta and toss vigorously until every strand is evenly coated. If the pesto seems too thick, add a tablespoon or two of the reserved pasta water to achieve your desired consistency.
- Serve the arugula pesto pasta immediately, garnished with the remaining toasted pine nuts and a generous sprinkle of extra Parmesan cheese. This dish is also wonderfully versatile and pairs deliciously with grilled shrimp or chicken for a more complete meal.
