Avocado Margaritas: A Creamy & Refreshing Twist on a Classic
As this post goes live, I’m thrilled to be basking in the glorious sunshine of Austin, Texas, reunited with my closest girlfriends. This vibrant city holds a special place in my heart, primarily because it’s “The Land Where I First Tasted An Avocado Margarita.” Yes, we’re back in Austin, and the excitement is palpable!
Reliving Austin Adventures: A Journey of Flavors and Friendship
Long-time readers of the blog might recall that just last year, my wonderful friend Kathryne and I embarked on an unforgettable adventure. We spent an entire month of February immersing ourselves in the unique culture of Austin. Our days were a perfect blend of remote work from our charming AirBnB kitchen, exploring countless music venues, hiking scenic trails, and most deliciously, eating and drinking our way through the city’s incredible culinary landscape. We both wholeheartedly agree that it was one of the best months of our lives, and the memories—especially those involving countless margaritas—have truly stuck with us. We’ve been missing Austin terribly ever since!
So, it’s with immense joy that I can finally share the news: we’re back! This time, our little Austin crew has expanded, bringing along a few more fantastic girlfriends for the ride. Kathryne and I have an extensive list of beloved spots we’d love to revisit. However, with only four days to explore, the challenge will be to expertly narrow down our culinary and cocktail agenda. Wish us luck! 😉
The Quest for the Perfect Margarita: Austin’s Influence
One thing is certain, though: exceptional margaritas are at the very top of everyone’s list. We are absolutely committed to hitting up several of our favorite happy hour spots. Austin, after all, introduced me to the smoky delights of a mezcal margarita and sparked my love affair with spicy cucumber margaritas. But perhaps its most unique contribution to my cocktail repertoire was the discovery of the avocado margarita. This surprisingly delicious creation felt like the perfect recipe to share with you all today, bringing a piece of Austin’s magic right to your home.

Unveiling Curra’s Grill: The Home of the Original Avocado Margarita
Funnily enough, after weeks of diligently searching for Austin’s finest margaritas, we stumbled upon some of our absolute favorites almost accidentally. It was towards the very end of our trip when we discovered a hidden gem just a few blocks from our AirBnB: a charming neighborhood restaurant called Curra’s Grill. Unlike many of the trendier, uber-hipster Mexican eateries scattered across the city, Curra’s offered a more traditional, casual, and wonderfully family-friendly atmosphere. This establishment had been a local staple for years, radiating authentic charm.
From the moment we tasted their chips and salsa, I was utterly smitten. My affection for Curra’s deepened even further when I scanned their menu and found an astonishing selection of over 15 different margaritas! Their legendary claim to fame was, without a doubt, their Avocado Margarita. Naturally, I had to try it. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from an avocado in a cocktail, but as it turned out, the avocado margarita was an absolute revelation – light, incredibly creamy, and utterly delightful.

The Avocado Advantage: A Refreshing and Smooth Sensation
And yes, when I say “light,” I truly mean it. The mild, buttery richness of the avocado beautifully mellows the typical sharp “kick” of a traditional margarita, transforming it into an incredibly refreshing and uniquely smooth and creamy experience. Since that first unforgettable sip in Austin, I’ve made quite a few avocado margaritas myself. I’ve found that adding a touch of fresh cilantro and a few slices of jalapeño, alongside the other classic margarita ingredients, provides an extra layer of complexity and a subtle, invigorating warmth. However, for those who prefer a simpler profile, the avocado alone is a magnificent addition, imparting its signature creaminess without overpowering the drink.

Crafting Your Own Creamy Avocado Margarita: Simple Steps to Delight
The beauty of the avocado margarita lies not just in its unique flavor, but also in its incredible ease of preparation. To whip up a batch of these exquisite drinks, simply combine all the ingredients in a blender and pulse until you achieve a wonderfully smooth, creamy consistency. I typically prefer to make these as a frozen concoction, offering a delightful chill perfect for warm days. However, you can easily omit the ice in the blender and serve these sophisticated margaritas on the rocks for an equally enjoyable experience.

Once blended, pour your creamy creation into glasses that have been expertly rimmed with salt – a crucial step, I might add, as the salt truly enhances and brings out the subtle, earthy notes of the avocado in these margaritas. Within mere minutes, you’ll be savoring a delicious batch of these light, creamy, and wonderfully refreshing drinks.

Customizing Your Avocado Margarita: Personal Touches
One of the best aspects of this avocado margarita recipe is its versatility. While the core ingredients create a perfectly balanced and delightful drink, there’s ample room for customization to suit your personal palate. If you crave a hint of herbal freshness, the addition of fresh cilantro leaves is a game-changer, complementing the creamy avocado beautifully. For those who enjoy a subtle fiery kick, a few slices of fresh jalapeño pulsed into the mix will provide a pleasant warmth without overwhelming the other flavors. Don’t be shy about adjusting the amount of agave nectar either – whether you prefer a sweeter cocktail or a more tart, tangy profile, you can easily tailor it to your liking. And of course, don’t forget the garnishes! A vibrant lime wedge, a sprig of cilantro, or even a thin slice of avocado floating on top adds a sophisticated finish and enhances the overall experience.
Beyond the Glass: The Allure of Austin’s Cocktail Scene and Future Inspirations
My ongoing love affair with margaritas, particularly the inventive ones, continues to be fueled by cities like Austin. The city’s spirit of culinary innovation, where traditional flavors meet daring new combinations, is truly inspiring. It’s a place where every corner seems to hold a new taste sensation waiting to be discovered. The avocado margarita is just one example of Austin’s unique ability to transform familiar concepts into something extraordinary and memorable. This trip, I’m excited to dive back into that vibrant scene, eager to uncover more delicious ideas and inspirations that I can bring back and share with all of you. Every sip, every bite, and every shared moment with friends adds another layer to our culinary journey, reinforcing the idea that the best recipes often come from the most cherished experiences.
