Location: Work From Home & Flexible

You can work from the comfort of your own home, your personal photography studio, or any environment where you can best unleash your creative potential. This remote setup offers incredible work-life balance and eliminates the daily commute, allowing you to dedicate more energy to your craft. Please note, to ensure seamless collaboration and logistical ease, this opportunity is open to US applicants only.

Hours: Part-Time with Growth Potential

We anticipate a starting commitment of approximately 15-20 hours per week. This part-time structure is designed to offer flexibility while providing a consistent creative outlet. For the right candidate who demonstrates exceptional skill and dedication, there is significant potential for these hours to increase in the future, growing with the evolving needs of Gimme Some Oven.

Starting Date: Flexible to Fit Your Schedule

While we are eager to welcome our new team member, we understand the importance of a smooth transition. The starting date for this position is flexible, though ideally, we would aim for a prompt integration to begin updating our visual library and supporting upcoming projects.

Key Responsibilities: Crafting Culinary Visuals

Your primary responsibility will be to consistently shoot irresistibly delicious recipe photos that not only tantalize the taste buds but also adhere to the clean, bright, and inviting Gimme Some Oven minimalist style. This isn’t just about taking pictures; it’s about creating visual narratives that enhance the user experience and maintain our brand’s distinct aesthetic. Your day-to-day tasks will encompass a comprehensive range of activities, ensuring every shot is perfect from conception to final edit:

  • Pre-planning & Creative Collaboration: You will work closely with me (Ali) on a weekly basis to meticulously plan and design upcoming recipe shoots. This involves brainstorming creative concepts, developing mood boards, discussing ideal angles and compositions, and ensuring that each shoot effectively highlights the recipe’s unique appeal and ingredients. This collaborative phase is crucial for aligning visions and setting the stage for successful photography.
  • Ingredient Sourcing & Grocery Shopping: A key part of food photography is starting with the best ingredients. You will be responsible for carefully picking up all necessary ingredients for each recipe shoot. This requires an eye for quality produce, fresh components, and an understanding of how these ingredients will translate visually on camera.
  • Professional Shooting & Composition: Utilizing your own professional camera equipment and expertise, you will be tasked with shooting high-quality food photos. This involves an understanding of natural light, composition, depth of field, and styling to create visually appealing and appetizing images that resonate with the Gimme Some Oven brand. We emphasize bright, natural light and a clean aesthetic to let the food shine.
  • Expert Photo Editing & Retouching: Following the shoot, you will be responsible for editing photos using industry-standard software such as Adobe Lightroom and/or Photoshop. This critical step involves color correction, exposure adjustments, cropping, and minor retouching to enhance the visual appeal while maintaining a natural, inviting look. Consistency in editing style across all images is paramount to uphold the Gimme Some Oven brand identity.

How To Apply: Showcase Your Culinary Photography Talent

We are excited to see your unique talent and how you envision contributing to the Gimme Some Oven aesthetic. To ensure your application stands out and gives us a comprehensive understanding of your skills, please send a detailed email with the subject line “Assistant Photographer Application – [Your Name]” to [email protected]. Your application should thoughtfully include the following components:

1. A Curated Portfolio: 6-8 Original Photos of an Existing Gimme Some Oven Recipe

This is the most crucial part of your application, allowing us to directly assess your photography and styling capabilities within our brand context. We ask you to select and re-shoot one of our existing recipes that we aim to update. This exercise will demonstrate your ability to interpret and enhance our visual style.

  • Choose from one of the following recipes (these are examples of recipes that we are actively looking to have updated and improved visually):
    • 5-Ingredient Easy White Chicken Chili
    • Barbacoa Tacos
    • Beef Enchiladas
    • Falafel
  • Styling on a Solid White Surface: To maintain consistency with the Gimme Some Oven brand, please style your chosen recipe on a solid white surface. This minimalist approach ensures the focus remains squarely on the food itself. I typically use a piece of white matte foam core board, which is usually inexpensive and readily available at most art supply stores. Alternatively, a clean white poster board or a solid white countertop would also serve beautifully.
  • Shoot and Edit 6-8 Files: Produce 6-8 distinct, high-resolution images of the chosen recipe. These photos should be shot and edited in a manner that aligns seamlessly with the current style of Gimme Some Oven posts. This task will allow us to evaluate your technical skills, creative vision, and understanding of our aesthetic.
    • We are specifically looking for:
      • A photography style that precisely matches current Gimme Some Oven photos — characterized by bright, natural backlighting, high contrast to make ingredients pop, rich saturation for vibrant colors, and minimal background elements or props to keep the food as the undisputed star.
      • Excellently styled food. While adhering to our core style, we encourage you to get creative and significantly improve upon the food styling observed in the older reference photos. Show us how you can make the dish truly sing!
      • An irresistibly delicious hero (top) photo. This main image should be a showstopper, drawing viewers in and making them instantly crave the recipe.
      • At least two compelling process photos. These should highlight specific key ingredients, crucial preparation steps, or unique textures of the recipe, providing visual guidance and storytelling for our readers.
      • Photos that have been professionally edited in either Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. It is critical that you submit .psd files for each photo. This allows us to review both your fully edited image and the original, untouched photo, giving us invaluable insight into your editing process and capabilities.
    • Don’t worry about:
      • Having the exact right dishes or props. While I often shoot on white dishes, please utilize what you have available. The emphasis is on the food and your photography skills, not your prop collection.
      • Adding text overlays to the photos. I will personally take care of all text overlays and graphic design elements for the blog. Your focus should be solely on the raw visual appeal.

2. Your Professional Resume

Please include an up-to-date resume that outlines your relevant experience, education, and any skills pertinent to this role. Highlight any previous food photography, styling, or editing experience, as well as proficiency with photography equipment and software.

3. Your Preferred Hourly Rate

Kindly state your preferred hourly rate for this position. This will help us understand your expectations and ensure a mutual fit within our budget for this exciting role.

We encourage timely submission of applications. Our team will begin reviewing submissions promptly.
