Important Update Regarding Baking Containers: Since this post was originally published in 2017, the manufacturer of the glass mason jars depicted in some of the older photos has advised against their use for baking due to safety concerns. While we work to update our imagery, please ensure you use oven-safe ramekins or other appropriate baking dishes for this recipe. Your safety in the kitchen is our top priority. Thank you for your understanding!
Life has a wonderful way of evolving, and sometimes, the smallest changes bring the greatest joys. Returning home from our honeymoon recently, we were met with the inevitable, heartwarming question from countless friends and family: “So, how’s married life?!” Our unwavering response? A resounding, enthusiastic “Absolutely incredible!”
Of course, we’re still navigating the exciting early days of this new chapter. But after months of the beautiful chaos that comes with wedding planning, there’s an unparalleled sense of peace and contentment in simply settling back into the rhythms of everyday life. And it’s the countless tiny details, the seemingly insignificant moments, that truly make this shared existence so special. Things like seeing my husband reach for his socks, nestled in the dresser drawer right beside mine each morning – a small, yet profoundly sweet realization of our shared space. Or the simple pleasure of signing up for a family music streaming plan, knowing our days will be filled with a communal soundtrack. Even the unexpected moments, like receiving a text from him that the dogs had managed to raid their food closet, turning a 15-pound bag of kibble into an all-you-can-eat buffet on the kitchen floor. While a momentary “gahhhh!”-inducing mess, it’s these shared challenges and silly stories that make every day richer. Having him here, by my side, to experience these random moments and share a knowing glance (and perhaps a stern, yet loving, talk with our furry friends about future decision-making) makes everything infinitely better.
Beyond the grand gestures and the shared responsibilities, one of the most unexpected joys of this past month has been discovering the beauty of independent activities within our shared home. It might sound unusual, but in our dating years, we often did everything together. While wonderful, this new dynamic is refreshing. Now, it’s a delight to be on the elliptical, getting a workout in, while he’s engrossed in work on his laptop from the comfort of the couch. Or for him to be tackling the dishes while I’m organizing bills at the dining table. Just the other night, this newfound balance truly shone. I was happily in the kitchen, experimenting and taste-testing another batch (yes, I’m thoroughly obsessed!) of these adorable Mini Fruit Crisps, while he was in the living room, strumming his guitar and rehearsing for an upcoming gig with a friend. There’s a distinct feeling of a beautiful, evolving stage in our relationship – doing our own independent, everyday life activities, yet always within the comforting embrace of our shared home. And I am absolutely loving every moment of it.
Speaking of things I’m loving, these individual-serving fruit crisps have completely captured my heart. They are incredibly simple to prepare, especially when using convenient ramekins. Each crisp is a vibrant burst of fresh, sweet fruit flavor, and the recipe is wonderfully adaptable – easily scaled down for a cozy dessert for one or two, or effortlessly multiplied to serve a large gathering. And the absolute best part? You have complete freedom to use whatever fruit your heart desires, making it a perfect dessert for any season or occasion.
In preparation for finally photographing and sharing this fantastic recipe, I embarked on a delightful mission, testing out approximately eight different fruit flavor combinations the other evening to determine the crowd favorites. As expected, everyone had a different opinion! This summer, I’ve developed a serious pineapple crisp obsession – I honestly can’t believe I hadn’t tried making a crisp with this tropical fruit until now! However, my husband Barclay insists I convey that the strawberry-blueberry crisp is the undisputed champion. The truth is, almost any juicy fruit, or a creative combination of your personal favorites, will yield a sensational result. This recipe is also an ingenious way to utilize any leftover fruit you might have on hand, transforming it into a dazzling dessert rather than letting it go to waste.
Bringing these delicious crisps to life is a straightforward process. First, you’ll whip up a simple, yet irresistible, oatmeal crisp topping. This versatile topping can also be easily adapted to be gluten-free, catering to various dietary preferences.
Next, prepare your chosen fruit filling, gently mixing it with a few key ingredients that enhance its natural sweetness and create that perfect bubbly texture during baking. Once the fruit mixture is ready, portion it evenly among your ramekins or oven-safe dishes. Generously sprinkle the prepared crisp topping over each one, ensuring a delightful crunchy layer. Then, bake them until the fruit filling is beautifully bubbly and tender, and the topping achieves a golden-brown hue and a wonderfully crispy texture.
(For the photo shoot, I indulged in creating a vibrant pineapple-peach fruit filling, alongside a classic and comforting strawberry-blueberry-raspberry combination – both equally divine!)
Once baked to perfection, it’s time to serve them up and enjoy!
While these Mini Fruit Crisps are absolutely divine on their own, I enthusiastically recommend enhancing the experience with a generous scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream or a dollop of freshly whipped cream. The contrast between the warm, bubbly fruit and the cool, luxurious topping is simply heavenly. However you choose to serve them, you truly can’t go wrong. They are the quintessential summer treat, offering a perfect blend of sweetness, texture, and refreshing fruit flavors. Prepare to be delighted!
Enjoy, everyone – these crisps are a true celebration of simple, delicious pleasures!

- 1/3 cup maple syrup
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 3 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 batch Oatmeal Crisp Topping (recipe below)
- Optional: vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for serving
Oatmeal Crisp Topping Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
- 1/4 cup almond meal (or all-purpose flour for a non-GF option)
- 1/4 cup sliced almonds
- 3 tablespoons melted butter or coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
To Make The Mini Fruit Crisps:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Arrange 8 half-pint ramekins or other small oven-safe baking dishes on a large baking sheet and set aside.
- In a generously sized bowl, combine the chopped fruit, maple syrup, cornstarch, and lemon juice. Stir gently but thoroughly until all the fruit is evenly coated. This mixture forms the luscious filling for your crisps.
- Carefully and evenly portion the prepared fruit mixture into each of the 8 ramekins, filling them generously. Then, evenly distribute the homemade oatmeal crisp topping over the fruit in each ramekin, ensuring a delightful layer for crisping.
- Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the fruit filling is beautifully bubbly and tender, and the golden-brown topping is wonderfully crispy. The aroma filling your kitchen will be irresistible!
- Remove the crisps from the oven and allow them to cool slightly for a few minutes before serving. For an ultimate dessert experience, serve immediately with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of fresh whipped cream.
To Make The Oatmeal Crisp Topping:
- In a medium bowl, combine all the topping ingredients: old-fashioned oats, almond meal (or all-purpose flour), sliced almonds, melted butter or coconut oil, maple syrup, ground cinnamon, and salt. Stir vigorously until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed and a crumbly topping forms.
Notes
Fruit Selection: This versatile recipe works beautifully with almost any juicy fruit. While berries, peaches, plums, and pineapple are fantastic, feel free to experiment with your favorites. If you opt to use apples, please note they tend to be less juicy than other fruits, so we recommend adding an extra sprinkle of cinnamon to enhance their flavor.
Gluten-Free Option: To ensure your fruit crisps are entirely gluten-free, always use certified gluten-free old-fashioned oats for the crisp topping.
Recommended Bakeware (Ramekins): As mentioned previously, please do not use glass mason jars for baking this recipe. For safe and optimal results, we strongly advise using traditional ceramic or glass ramekins, or any other oven-safe individual baking containers you may have.
