However, the reality of life, especially with a busy schedule and little ones running around, often means that dedicating hours to layering and baking a traditional lasagna isn’t always feasible. That’s where the ingenious concept of Ravioli Lasagna steps in, transforming a labor of love into an effortlessly elegant meal. This recipe has quickly become a steadfast favorite, offering all the beloved flavors and textures of classic lasagna without the extensive prep work.
Imagine a delicious Italian-inspired dinner that comes together with remarkable ease. This isn’t just a shortcut; it’s a culinary revelation that makes delicious Italian cuisine accessible on even the busiest weeknights. With only 15 minutes of active prep time, you can assemble a hearty, flavorful dish that tastes like it took hours. It’s perfect for families, entertaining guests, or simply treating yourself to a comforting meal without the fuss.
The beauty of this ravioli lasagna lies in its simplicity and ingenious ingredient swap. Instead of delicate pasta sheets, we leverage the convenience and pre-packaged goodness of frozen ravioli. This single change eliminates the need to boil noodles separately, saving you valuable time and effort. The ravioli, nestled between luscious layers of savory meat sauce, creamy ricotta, and generous amounts of mozzarella, cooks perfectly in the oven, emerging tender and delightful. It magically absorbs the flavors of the sauce, providing that familiar comforting bite that everyone adores in a traditional lasagna.
Why Ravioli Lasagna is Your New Weeknight Hero
This recipe truly is a game-changer for anyone seeking a hearty, satisfying meal without the typical time commitment of Italian cooking. It embodies the essence of “effortless gourmet,” proving that exceptional flavor doesn’t have to come at the expense of simplicity. Here’s why this ravioli lasagna will quickly become a staple in your meal rotation:
- Unbeatable Simplicity: Forget the meticulous layering of traditional lasagna noodles. With pre-made ravioli, the assembly process is incredibly straightforward. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can get this dish into the oven.
- Minimal Prep Time: Just 15 minutes of hands-on work is all it takes. The rest is oven magic, allowing you to relax while your delicious dinner bakes to perfection.
- Packed with Flavor: Despite its ease, this lasagna doesn’t compromise on taste. The combination of savory Italian sausage, aromatic garlic and onion, rich marinara, creamy ricotta, and melty mozzarella creates a symphony of classic Italian flavors.
- Versatile & Adaptable: Whether you’re a meat-lover or prefer a vegetarian option, this recipe easily accommodates your dietary preferences. Add your favorite vegetables or adjust the spice level to make it uniquely yours.
- Family Favorite: This dish is a proven crowd-pleaser. Its comforting, cheesy goodness appeals to both adults and children, making it an ideal choice for family dinners.
Preparing this shortcut lasagna involves a few simple steps. First, you’ll sauté ground Italian sausage with aromatic onion and garlic, building a foundational layer of flavor. This savory mixture is then combined with your favorite marinara sauce, creating a rich meat sauce that forms the heart of the dish. For those who prefer a meatless option, simply omit the sausage and perhaps add some extra vegetables or plant-based protein to your marinara. The layering process is where the ravioli truly shines – simply alternate layers of sauce, frozen ravioli (no need to thaw!), creamy ricotta, and generous handfuls of mozzarella cheese in a baking dish. A quick trip to the oven transforms these simple ingredients into a bubbling, golden masterpiece. Finish with a sprinkle of fresh Parmesan and fragrant basil, and prepare to dive in. The ravioli effortlessly provides the textural and flavor complexity we all adore in traditional lasagna, without any of the extra work.

Essential Ingredients for Your Perfect Ravioli Lasagna
Crafting a truly memorable ravioli lasagna starts with selecting quality ingredients. Here’s a closer look at the components that make this dish shine, along with tips for choosing the best ones:
- Frozen Ravioli: The star of our shortcut lasagna! You’ll need two 25-ounce bags of your favorite frozen ravioli. The beauty here is that there’s absolutely no need to thaw them beforehand; they’ll cook perfectly in the oven as part of the lasagna. Feel free to choose any flavor you love – classic cheese, spinach and ricotta, or even a mushroom-filled ravioli will work wonderfully and add different nuances to the dish.
- Marinara Sauce: A good marinara sauce forms the backbone of this recipe. Don’t hesitate to use your absolute favorite brand and flavor; quality here makes a significant difference. A robust tomato-basil marinara is always a safe and delicious bet, offering a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. However, don’t shy away from exploring other specialty sauces like roasted garlic or arrabbiata if you want to infuse extra character into your lasagna.
- Italian Sausage: For those who love a meaty depth, Italian sausage is an excellent choice. I personally enjoy the kick of spicy Italian sausage, but a mild or sweet variety works equally well, offering a more nuanced and subtle flavor profile. Ground sausage is typically easiest to work with for browning, but if you prefer, you can purchase sausage links, remove the casings, and crumble the meat, or even slice them into coins for a different texture.
- Garlic and Onion: While many marinara sauces contain these aromatics, taking the extra step to sauté an additional small white onion and a few cloves of minced garlic in the sausage drippings adds an incredible layer of fresh, vibrant flavor. This extra step elevates the sauce from good to truly exceptional, creating a more complex and inviting aroma and taste.
- Ricotta Cheese: This creamy, soft cheese is essential for achieving the classic lasagna texture and balancing the savory components. Ricotta adds a delightful moisture and a subtly sweet, mild flavor that beautifully complements the robust marinara and sharp cheeses. It creates pockets of creamy indulgence throughout the dish, making each bite even more satisfying.
- Mozzarella Cheese: When it comes to mozzarella, my philosophy is “the more, the merrier!” This is the cheese that delivers that iconic melty, stringy, and milky goodness synonymous with lasagna. Pre-shredded mozzarella is perfectly convenient, but if you want to truly elevate the experience, consider using fresh mozzarella balls, sliced into coins and layered throughout. The fresh mozzarella melts into an even creamier, more luxurious texture.
- Parmesan Cheese: To finish your lasagna with a flourish, freshly-grated Parmesan cheese is non-negotiable. Its salty, nutty, umami-rich flavor provides the perfect sharp counterpoint to the other ingredients. Skip the pre-grated green shaker cans; investing in a block of good-quality Parmesan and grating it yourself will unlock a superior, bolder flavor that truly enhances the entire dish.
- Fresh Basil: A final sprinkle of roughly-chopped or julienned fresh basil leaves adds not only a beautiful pop of vibrant green but also an aromatic, peppery, and sweet freshness that brightens every serving. It’s the perfect finishing touch that ties all the Italian flavors together.

Creative Variations: Make This Lasagna Your Own
One of the most delightful aspects of this ravioli lasagna recipe is its incredible flexibility. It serves as a fantastic base for customization, allowing you to tailor it to your preferences, dietary needs, or whatever ingredients you have on hand. Don’t hesitate to get creative and make it uniquely yours!
- Tortellini Swap: If you love tortellini as much as ravioli, feel free to substitute! This recipe generally works just as beautifully using your favorite frozen tortellini in place of ravioli, adding a slightly different shape and bite.
- Boost with Extra Veggies: Elevate the nutritional value and flavor by incorporating your favorite cooked vegetables. Consider adding sautéed mushrooms, roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes (drained and chopped), tender zucchini, artichoke hearts, or even cooked eggplant. Simply stir them into your marinara sauce before layering.
- Add a Splash of Greens: For an extra dose of goodness, wilt chopped spinach, kale, or collard greens directly into your marinara sauce. The greens will cook down beautifully and seamlessly blend into the dish, adding nutrients and a subtle earthy flavor.
- Pesto Perfection: Introduce a vibrant, herbaceous layer by spreading a thin coating of basil pesto over one of your cheese layers. Alternatively, drizzle fresh pesto over the top of the baked lasagna (instead of or in addition to fresh basil) for a burst of rich, fragrant flavor.
- Turn Up the Heat: If you enjoy a bit of spice, there are several ways to make this lasagna fiery. Use a spicy Italian sausage, opt for an already-spicy marinara sauce, or generously sprinkle additional crushed red pepper flakes into your meat sauce. For an authentic Italian kick, consider adding a teaspoon or two of Calabrian chiles.
- Go Vegetarian or Vegan: This recipe is incredibly adaptable for plant-based eaters. Simply omit the Italian sausage or replace it with your favorite plant-based Italian sausage (brands like Beyond or Field Roast work wonderfully). Ensure your chosen ravioli is vegetarian (most cheese ravioli are) or opt for a vegan ravioli alternative. You can also use a dairy-free ricotta and mozzarella for a full vegan rendition.
- Cheese Blends: Experiment with different cheese combinations. While mozzarella and ricotta are classic, consider adding a layer of provolone for extra tang, or a sprinkle of fontina for a nuttier flavor.
- Herb Infusion: Beyond basil, consider mixing in other fresh or dried herbs into your sauce or ricotta layer. Oregano, thyme, or a touch of rosemary can add different aromatic dimensions.

Expert Tips for the Perfect Ravioli Lasagna
While this recipe is incredibly forgiving, a few simple tips can help you achieve the best possible results every time:
- Don’t Thaw the Ravioli: Resist the urge! Frozen ravioli goes straight into the baking dish. It will cook perfectly in the oven, absorbing moisture and flavor from the sauce.
- Quality Marinara Matters: Since the marinara sauce is such a prominent flavor, use a brand you genuinely love. A good quality sauce will elevate the entire dish.
- Even Layers: Try to spread your sauce, ricotta, and mozzarella in even layers. This ensures that every bite has a balanced combination of flavors and textures.
- Cover During Baking: Covering the lasagna loosely with foil for the initial baking period helps the ravioli cook through and prevents the top layer of cheese from browning too quickly. Remove the foil for the last 10 minutes to allow the cheese to bubble and turn golden.
- Broiler for Golden Perfection: A quick minute or two under the broiler at the end can give your lasagna a beautifully golden, bubbly, and slightly crispy cheese topping. Keep a close eye on it, as broilers can brown very quickly!
- Rest Before Serving: Like traditional lasagna, allowing your ravioli lasagna to rest for 10-15 minutes after it comes out of the oven helps the layers set. This makes for cleaner slices and prevents the dish from falling apart.
Storing and Reheating Your Delicious Leftovers
This ravioli lasagna makes fantastic leftovers, often tasting even better the next day as the flavors meld further. Here’s how to store and reheat it:
- Storage: Allow the lasagna to cool completely, then cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. You can also transfer individual servings to airtight containers. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
- Freezing: Ravioli lasagna freezes beautifully! Once cooled, you can freeze the entire dish (well-wrapped) or individual portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 2-3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheating (Oven): For best results, reheat individual slices or the entire dish (covered with foil) in an oven preheated to 350°F (175°C) until heated through, about 20-30 minutes for slices and 45-60 minutes for a whole dish.
- Reheating (Microwave): Individual portions can be quickly reheated in the microwave for 2-4 minutes, or until hot. Be aware that the texture might be slightly softer than oven-reheated portions.

Description
This ravioli lasagna recipe is super-easy to make with basic ingredients and only 15 minutes of hands-on prep time.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground Italian sausage
- 1 small white onion, diced
- 4 large cloves garlic, minced
- 2 (28-ounce) jars good-quality marinara sauce
- 2 (25-ounce) packages frozen ravioli
- 1 (15-ounce) package ricotta cheese
- 3 cups (12 ounces) shredded mozzarella cheese
- toppings: freshly-grated Parmesan cheese and chopped fresh basil
Instructions
- Prep oven and baking dish. Heat oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
- Brown the sausage. Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook until browned, using a wooden spatula to crumble the meat as it cooks. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the sausage to a clean plate and set aside.
- Sauté the aromatics. Reserve about 1 tablespoon of the sausage grease in the pan and discard the rest. Add the onion and garlic to the grease and sauté for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until softened. Add the marinara sauce and cooked sausage to the pan and stir to combine. Turn off the heat.
- Layer the lasagna. Spread about 1 cup of the meat sauce to the bottom of the baking dish until it is evenly covered. Layer in each of the following ingredients in an even layer:
- one package ravioli
- all of the ricotta
- half of the mozzarella
- half of the remaining meat sauce
- one package ravioli
- all of the remaining meat sauce
- all of the remaining mozzarella
- Bake. Loosely cover the pan with aluminum foil, ideally without touching the cheese. Bake for 35 minutes. Uncover and bake for 10 more minutes. Then turn on the broiler and broil for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is lightly golden and bubbly.
- Serve. Sprinkle the top of the lasagna with Parmesan cheese and basil and serve warm while the cheese is nice and gooey. Enjoy!
