A Culinary Delight for Any Occasion: Why Prosciutto-Wrapped Shrimp are a Must-Try

If you’re searching for an effortlessly elegant appetizer this holiday season, look no further than these incredibly tasty shrimp. Often hailed as the “fruit of the sea,” shrimp are versatile, quick-cooking, and universally loved. This particular recipe elevates them to a new level of sophistication with minimal effort, making it ideal for everything from casual gatherings to formal holiday parties.

I am delighted to share this recipe today in collaboration with Eat Shrimp, a wonderful organization dedicated to showcasing the versatility and deliciousness of shrimp through a myriad of recipes on their Facebook and Pinterest pages. While turkey and ham often take center stage for the main course during festive periods, I consistently keep a bag of frozen shrimp in my freezer, ready to transform into my favorite course: appetizers. There’s something undeniably satisfying about starting a meal with an array of delectable small bites, and shrimp always make for a magnificent beginning.

It’s true, I am absolutely that person who happily indulges in appetizers before the main meal even begins. And if shrimp are involved, the more festive the occasion feels. If it’s shrimp *and* prosciutto? Well, the turkey can always be enjoyed as leftovers later. The combination of succulent shrimp and savory, slightly crisp prosciutto is simply irresistible, promising a culinary experience that will have your guests reaching for seconds.

The Simplicity of Preparation: Your Go-To Appetizer Solution

In my household, shrimp appetizers like this one are a regular occurrence, precisely because of their unmatched speed and ease of preparation. This recipe is a prime example of culinary efficiency. The process is remarkably straightforward: simply take thin strips of prosciutto and wrap them snugly around individual pieces of shrimp. Arrange these neatly on a baking sheet, ensuring a little space between each one for even cooking. A light brush of melted butter or a drizzle of olive oil, followed by a sprinkle of salt and freshly ground pepper, enhances their natural flavors and helps achieve that desired golden finish.

Pop them into a preheated oven, and in mere minutes—typically just 8 to 10 minutes—you’ll witness a magical transformation. The shrimp will turn a vibrant pink and become perfectly opaque, signaling they are cooked through. Simultaneously, the prosciutto will crisp up beautifully, releasing its salty, savory aroma. The melted butter contributes to a rich, golden exterior and enhances the overall succulence. Once out of the oven, these delightful appetizers are ready to be served immediately, warm and inviting.

Elevate Your Experience: Serving Suggestions and Dipping Delights

While I firmly believe that these prosciutto-wrapped shrimp are a showstopper on their own, requiring no further adornment, there are always ways to enhance the experience if you’re in the mood for a little extra indulgence. A quick and easy garlic butter dipping sauce can be whipped up in minutes, adding another layer of flavor that complements the shrimp and prosciutto beautifully. Alternatively, for those who prefer a brighter, zesty note, a light drizzle of fresh lemon juice can impart a delightful “scampi-style” finish. The choice is entirely yours, allowing you to tailor this versatile appetizer to your personal taste preferences or the occasion.

To add a touch of charm and make serving even easier, I love presenting these with cute little cocktail forks or wooden skewers. These simple additions not only make for an elegant presentation but also allow guests to easily pick up and enjoy these savory bites without fuss. I found these particular wooden skewers at World Market, and they add a rustic yet refined touch that perfectly suits the dish.

Simple. Classy. Delicious. It’s time for you to try them and discover your new favorite appetizer!

Description

This prosciutto-wrapped shrimp recipe is easy to make with just a few ingredients, and it works perfectly as an appetizer or as a topper for salads or pasta.

Ingredients

Prosciutto-Wrapped Shrimp

  • 5-7 thin slices prosciutto
  • 1 pound jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined (tail on or off)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • salt and pepper to taste

(Optional) Garlic Butter Dipping Sauce

  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • pinch of salt and pepper

Instructions

To Make The Prosciutto-Wrapped Shrimp:

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. On a clean cutting board, carefully slice the prosciutto into three long strips. Then, slice each of those strips in half crosswise. You should now have six long strips, each approximately 1-inch wide by 4-5 inches long. Take one strip of prosciutto and wrap it gently around the body of a single piece of shrimp. Place the wrapped shrimp seam-side-down onto a parchment-covered baking sheet. Repeat this process with the remaining shrimp and prosciutto until all are wrapped and arranged on the sheet.
  3. Using a pastry brush, evenly brush the melted butter onto the top surface of each wrapped shrimp. Season generously with a few pinches of salt and freshly ground black pepper, according to your preference.
  4. Bake for approximately 8-10 minutes, or until the shrimp transform into a vibrant pink color and become opaque, indicating they are fully cooked. At the same time, the prosciutto should be slightly crispy and golden. Serve warm immediately, optionally accompanied by cocktail forks or skewers for easy enjoyment.

To Make The Garlic Butter Dipping Sauce:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper until all ingredients are well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning as desired. Serve warm alongside the prosciutto-wrapped shrimp.
